QUINVITA and the Hagen Desert Farming Project sign a strategic alliance on Jatropha curcas

30/01/2012

The Hagen Desert Farming Project (HDFP), a humanitarian initiative designed for the most environmentally challenged northern states in Nigeria and the industrial crop technology company, QUINVITA announced today they have entered into a major strategic Jatropha development alliance. Under the signed agreement, as a member of the QUINVITA knowledge platforms for breeding, cultivar development and agronomy, HDFP will access the QUINVITA PRO (QVP) seed cultivars for planting in the project. Both companies agree that this relationship will provide the basis for an extensive collaboration on the testing and demonstration of different Jatropha lines, especially selected for adaptation to West‐Africa and appropriate agronomy, applicable by out‐growers who will be engaged by the HDFP.

Claus Hagen, the Managing Director of HDFP, welcomes the alliance with QUINVITA: ‘’QUINVITA has developed over the years a unique knowledge base in Jatropha genetics and agronomy, and is one of the few companies in the world with a combination of seeds, technology and knowledge readily available for practical implementation in professional Jatropha farming. Adding QUINVITA as a partner to the HDFP program will result in a technological boost to the small holder‐enabled project implementation planned by HDFP throughout the borderline states in Nigeria. To be able to execute the projects with very advanced state of the art Jatropha products and know‐how will give HDFP an anticipated start‐up advantage and will be a key component of our success towards making these states more self‐sufficient for food and energy needs.”

Henk Joos, the CEO of QUINVITA is pleased with the alliance: “Operating in a number of countries that are deprived of essential supplies of food and energy, QUINVITA will, as one of its key business objectives, contribute to the creation of a world which is more in balance. QUINVITA is extremely proud and honored to have been selected as a technical partner for the Hagen Desert Farming Project for the realization of the NATIONAL GREEN WALL SAHARA (GWS) SHELTERBELT PROJECT in Nigeria. As a member of the HDFP initiative, QUINVITA is very pleased it can assist Nigeria with its technology and know‐how to combat poverty and unemployment and to create de‐centralized power systems. ’’

The Hagen Desert Farming Project was created to fight desert encroachment and to develop integrated agricultural systems to produce local supplies of food and bio‐energy. As part of the HDFP implementation, the project will establish centers of excellence for targeted distribution of improved seed and agronomy practices for Jatropha cultivation and will assist the planting of large acreages of Jatropha as a novel energy crop.
