Janssen and EFSD will jointly fund research into the kidney’s role in diabetes

27/09/2010

Janssen and the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) announced that the two organisations will jointly contribute up to a €500,000 pool to fund a three-year research programme into the role of the kidney in type 2 diabetes mellitus. EFSD is the research arm of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

The EFSD/Janssen Programme is intended to stimulate and accelerate European research aimed at understanding the role of the kidney in diabetes, with special emphasis on the role of the renal glucose threshold (RGT). The RGT is the level of glucose in the blood, above which the kidneys begin to excrete it from the body through the urine.

The research initiative - which will begin in 2011 and run until 2013 - was officially announced today during the 46th EASD Meeting in Stockholm.

“EFSD is proud to join forces with Janssen to thoroughly explore type-2 diabetes which, despite being one of the defining health problems of the 21st century, remains insufficiently understood,” commented Professor Dr. Ulf Smith, Gothenburg, President of EASD/EFSD.

The partnership continues a longstanding tradition of collaboration between the EFSD and Johnson & Johnson companies.

“This programme signals our long-term commitment to better understanding some of the root causes and potential new treatments options for type 2 diabetes. We hope that the results of this research will aid the diabetes community in the development of more effective approaches to combating this ever-growing problem,” commented Professor Günter Huhle, Vice-President Medical and Scientific Affairs, Janssen.
