Een internationaal team van wetenschappers, waaronder Yves Van de Peer van VIB (Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie) en de UGent, heeft de genetische code van de appel gekraakt. Uit de 742,3 miljoen letters DNA hebben de onderzoekers onder andere de genen geïdentificeerd die instaan voor het aroma en de smaak van de appel. Dankzij het werk kunnen plantenveredelaars nu veel sneller nieuwe appelvariëteiten selecteren – zowel naar smaak als naar weerstand tegen ziektes.
