The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium (ITM) is one of the world’s leading institutes in research on tropical medicine (including aids) and healthcare in resource-poor settings.
At ITM, 400 scientists and technicians work on human and livestock diseases.
From population level to the molecular level. They study and actively fight 'major' diseases as AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, but also 'neglected diseases' as sleeping sickness, leishmania, worm infections, Buruli ulcer.
ITM coordinates and carries out research all over the world, in close collaboration with international partners. ITM executes an extensive capacity strengthening program in its network of partner institutes in Africa, South America and Asia.
Yearly, about 700 medical doctors, veterinarians and biomedical scientists follow advanced postgraduate courses; around 100 researchers are preparing their PhD. The medical services handle over 30 000 consultations a year.
