Bio Base Europe is the first open innovation and education center for the biobased economy in Europe, consisting of a Bioprocess Pilot Plant in Ghent and a Training Facility in Terneuzen. The pilot plant in Ghent aids its customers (Spin-off companies, research institutes, SMEs and multinationals) in the scale up of bioprocesses such as pretreatment of biomass, biocatalysis, fermentation, green chemistry and downstream purification.
The Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant in Ghent (Belgium) is a flexible and diversified pilot plant that operates from kg to ton scale. It is there to close the critical gap between scientific feasibility and industrial application of new biotechnological processes. It is a one-stop-shop that performs the entire value chain in a single plant, from the biomass green resource to the final product. The Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant focuses on second generation technologies converting agricultural waste products and non-food crops into biofuels, bioplastics and other bioproducts.
The Bio Base Europe Training Center in Terneuzen (The Netherlands ) is an education, network and exhibition center promoting the development of a sustainable, biobased economy. It offers general and company-specific training connecting closely with the market demand. It addresses an industry-wide shortage of skilled process operators and technical maintenance specialists for biobased and sustainable energy processes.

You will find a substantial diversity of equipment in our plant: bioreactors for fermentation and biocatalysis as well as chemical reactors for green chemistry. We offer a large scale of technologies for plant fractionation and biomass pretreatment next to techniques for down-stream-processing, the isolation and reprocessing of the final product to the desirable purity. This includes equipment for evaporation, crystallization, electro-dialysis, extraction, membrane processes, ion exchange, drying, etc. Next to that, we offer the necessary facilities for process and quality control.
Companies and schools can use the Bio Base Europe Training Center process facilitities for tailor-made training programs targeted mainly on bioprocesses. Students can make use of state-of-the-art installations, knowledge and techniques, developed thanks to the close collaboration we have with knowledge and education institutes and the industry.
