The Launch of The (Bio-)Medical Imaging Platform

To support innovations in the healthcare domain at the crossroads of the Key Enabling Technologies of biotechnology and digital technologies, DSP Valley and FlandersBio are launching 3 separate platforms: one on smart implants, one on (bio)medical imaging and one on lab-on-chip & diagnostics. The launch of the latter platform (LoC & Diagnostics) will take place on 31 January and is fully booked with over 60 people joining. We hope for a similar enthusiastic response for the upcoming two platform launch meetings. The participation fee is 25 euro for members of FlandersBio & DSP Valley (including academia & government) and 50 euro for non-members. read more

Biomedical Congress

The Biomedical Congress is an annual event organized by the master students of Biomedical Sciences and for the first time also the students Industrial Engineering at KU Leuven. This year, the 8th edition will take place and the Biomedical Congress has become an established concept in our education. In this light, we get full support from the faculty of Medicine and the faculty of Industrial Engineering in the organization of this event. Master and bachelor students of Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry and Clinical Engineering are invited to attend the lectures and job fair. Also, interested (para)medical and PhD students, as well as researchers of the department of Biomedical Sciences are more than welcome. read more

Phase Transitions in Biology and Disease

In the past few years the concept of protein phase transitions has taken the field of cell biology and protein biochemistry by storm. The initial discoveries were met with great enthusiasm as they provide the rationale for the formation of membrane-less organelles, such as stress granules, processing bodies and RNP bodies, in biology and human disease. By studying the biophysics of the involved proteins, it was shown that this process could be modeled by liquid-liquid demixing, also making the connection of such liquid compartments to characteristic protein aggregations observed in numerous neurodegenerative diseases. Whereas this is perhaps one of the biggest breakthroughs in these fields in recent years, key questions remain to be addressed towards the goal of fully understanding their functional properties in the cell and targeting them in proteinopathies. read more
